In a heartfelt statement, the Canadian actor wrote that he and Spelling have decided to โgo our separate ways and start a new journey of our ownโ. He added that they will continue to work together as loving parents and guide and love their children through this difficult time. He also asked for privacy and thanked his fans for their support and kindness.
The split comes after months of speculation about the state of their relationship, which has been plagued by rumors of infidelity, financial troubles, and marital strife. The couple met on the set of Mind Over Murder in 2005, when they were both married to other people. They fell in love and divorced their respective spouses to be together. They tied the knot in a private ceremony in Fiji in May 2006.
Spelling and McDermott seemed to have a fairy-tale romance, but their marriage was tested by several challenges over the years. In 2013, McDermott admitted to cheating on Spelling with a woman he met in Toronto while filming Chopped Canada. The scandal was documented on their reality show True Tori, which showed them trying to save their marriage through therapy and counseling.
The couple also faced financial difficulties, as they struggled to pay off their debts and taxes. They were sued by American Express for unpaid bills in 2016 and 2019. They also owed more than $1 million in federal and state taxes, according to People magazine. Spelling blamed their money woes on her lavish lifestyle and poor spending habits.
In addition, Spelling and McDermott had to deal with the pressures of raising five children in the public eye. They are parents to Liam, 16, Stella, 15, Hattie, 11, Finn, 10, and Beau, 6. Spelling revealed that she suffered from postpartum depression after giving birth to four of her kids. She also admitted that she had difficulty balancing her career and motherhood.
The signs of trouble in their marriage became more evident in 2021, when Spelling was spotted without her wedding ring on several occasions. She also revealed that she and McDermott were sleeping in separate bedrooms due to his busy filming schedule. A source told Us Weekly that they were โhaving major issues for over a yearโ and that Spelling wanted a divorce but felt trapped.
The couple made their last public appearance together at their daughter Stellaโs 15th birthday party at the Beverly Hills Hilton on June 14, 2023. They also attended the Stand for Kids Gala in Los Angeles with their four youngest children on June 11, 2023. However, McDermott was noticeably absent from Spellingโs family holiday card in November 2021.
Spelling has not yet commented on the split, but she has been focusing on her work projects. She is currently co-hosting the podcast โ90210MGโ with her former Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Jennie Garth. She is also set to star in a new comedy series called Messyness, which is a spin-off of Ridiculousness.
Despite their separation, Spelling and McDermott have vowed to remain amicable and supportive of each other for the sake of their children. They have also expressed their gratitude for the love they shared during their marriage. As they embark on their new journey of their own, they hope to find happiness and peace in their future endeavors.
