After a temporary closure lasting nearly eight months due to a fire incident from June 2022 to February 2023, Freeport LNG is now set to contribute additional liquefied natural gas (LNG) to global markets, meeting the heightened demand expected during the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere.
FERC’s decision is rooted in a thorough review of Freeport LNG’s request, submitted on November 17, 2023. The approval takes into account the corrective measures implemented in response to the incident in June 2022 and the satisfactory progress of cooldown activities.
The regulator emphasizes the necessity of adhering to all outlined plans, procedures, and mitigating measures previously submitted by Freeport LNG. Any modifications require subsequent approvals, ensuring a rigorous adherence to safety standards.
Freeport LNG, currently unavailable for comment on the approval, had faced challenges during the summer of 2022 when global gas prices soared due to reduced Russian gas supplies to Europe amid geopolitical tensions.
In the initial phase of restart efforts, Freeport LNG successfully recommissioned its three liquefaction trains, two LNG storage tanks, and berth (Dock 1). However, clearance for recommissioning LNG Tank 3 is still pending.
When working at full power, the three liquefaction trains at Freeport LNG can turn about 2.1 billion cubic feet of gas into LNG every day, helping meet the world’s energy needs.
Getting this important approval is a big deal for Freeport LNG. It lets them take a crucial role in fulfilling the global demand for LNG.
